Small-Block Chevy Cylinder Head Identification

When GM first introduced its small-block engine to the world, it was specifically designed to give Chevrolet an edge over Ford’s flathead V-8. This was in the mid-’50s, and before that, Chevrolet relied on inline six-cylinder engines to power its passenger vehicles. However, the flathead V-8 was a definite reason Chevrolet had to step-up its game.

Throughout the small block’s timeline, there were three generations of the legendary mill, and the general architecture carried through to the third generation (LS), which was introduced in 1997. The first generation that started it all in 1955, remained in effect until 1992, when the second generation (LT1) was released. The second-generation engine featured aluminum heads, reverse-flow cooling (the heads received coolant first, in lieu of the block), and electronic controls. Then, in 1997, the third-generation small block was released.

In 1962, the 327ci engine in the Corvette was the first small block to offer a 4-inch bore. The cylinder heads on top of that engine were the now-famous double-hump heads. Today, these engine-breathing regulators are usually referred to as “Fuelie” heads, because they were released on Corvettes with Rochester’s fuel injection.

Are any of these worth a performance rebuild? If you know what to look for, you could find an uncut diamond waiting to be polished.

Those double-hump heads are still a favorite with nostalgic enthusiasts, even with the availability of today’s better flowing aftermarket offerings.

During the small block’s storied history, there have been a myriad of cylinder head variations, and we are often asked what heads go with what engine, and which ones offer the most performance. Typically, this question is asked after someone locates a set of heads at a swap meet and would like to know if they’re worth anything.

To help you answer that question, we have put together this cylinder head ID listing of  Gen-I and Gen-II small-block Chevy heads. Now, when the question “what heads are these, and will they work for me?” arises while walking around a swap meet, you can at least know what is sitting on the ground or table in front of you. This list, however will not include the gen-III LS offerings.

One thing to keep in mind, the Gen-1 and LT-specific heads are not easily interchangeable. Each will physically bolt up to the other engine, but the water passages don’t line up. The exhaust ports and exhaust manifold-bolt holes are in the same location. The intake manifold is proprietary to the LT1. However, a standard small-block Chevy intake can be modified to work. All LT1 engines use center-bolt valve covers.

Small-Block Chevy Gen-I Cylinder Heads

Standard Gen-I small-block Chevy heads position the valves at a 23-degree angle to the deck. In 1989, Chevy introduced the 18-degree Bow Tie aluminum head that shifted the valve-angle vertically, while simultaneously raising the intake port to take advantage of this angle. The advantage of the valve angle change is improved airflow due to placing the valve in a more “upright” position relative to the piston. Raising the port also necessitated a dedicated intake manifold.
