Here at LSX Magazine, we love record setters. Pushing boundaries is the ultimate goal of really any worthwhile pursuit. So when the guys over at Lsxeprts brought the standing half-mile Corvette record back to the United States, we took notice. Not only did they bring it back, but they obliterated the old record of 223 mph with a blistering 229 mile-per-hour pass. The guys over at Lethal Shutter Productions brings us the footage.
The previous record was held by “Piranha Team” who originally set the record in Qatar—where they’re based. Not only are we glad to see the record return to the country of the Corvette’s origin, we also think that it just might be the overall GM half-mile record of all time. While these things can be hard to track, after extensive research, we’re not aware of any GM vehicle that has been faster in the standing half-mile. If we’re wrong, speak up so we can take a peek at that, too.
In the mean time, this is absolutely the fastest half-mile Corvette in the world and likely the fastest GM vehicle as well. The star of the show is actually an Lsxperts shop vehicle that just so happens to be a 1999 C5 Corvette. Stuffed with a 388 cubic inch engine built by Brian Tooley Racing, the machine is fed boost by two 76 mm Precision turbos.
A Holley Hi-Ram, which has virtually become the signature of the shop, sits atop the potent mill and provides the Trick Flow heads with liberal doses of pressurized atmosphere. A massive water-to-air intercooler sits between the manifold hat and base and helps keep the inlet temperatures as brisk as possible.
A Brian Tooley Racing cam and valve train keeps everything operating at peak efficiency while a FuelTech engine management system, paired with Fuel Injector Connection squirters, handles the finer details. The engine is backed by an RPM Transmissions powerglide two-speed tranny coupled by an FTI torque converter. The transmission feeds directly into a 9-inch center section that actually retains the independent rear suspension.
Believe it or not, the record-breaking pass was actually laid down on the Corvette’s first outing and it all went down at the recent SlipStream Racing half-mile event held in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. The car obviously has a lot more in it and you could see it breaking its own record at upcoming events, the next of which is the wannaGOFAST half-mile shootout in Ocala, Florida October 28-29. If you’re in the area, you definitely don’t want to miss it.
The record was set by Charlie Hill, Lsxepert shop owner and all around hot foot. While obviously the whole team was ecstatic with the result, Charlie was as cool as a cucumber—obviously the silent buy deadly type. And while the record is quite the feat, Lsxperts aren’t resting on their laurels either. They plan to increase the gap at the Corvette’s next outing. However, their are several contenders hot on their heels. 1320video recently captured a rather potent C6 Corvette laying down a 211 mph pass in Colorado Springs. Needless to say, with that kind of altitude, this C6 could give anyone a run for their money.
Only time will tell, but for now Lsxperts can sleep soundly at night knowing that they have the fastest Corvette to have ever blasted down the half-mile—and that’s anything but a dream.
