Spotlight On Pertronix Performance Product’s Smithy’s Mufflers

The video shows Smithy’s Muffler unique glasspack tone on a 1957 Chevy 283 with a 10:1 compression ratio, 270hp fuel injected cylinder heads, Fenton 3×2 intake with three Stromberg 97 carburetors.

Smithy Mufflers were originally called steel-packs and were packaged with steel chips and wool to create a unique sound in the 1920s. Over the years the packing material changed to stainless steel wool and the Smithy’s tone and performance remained. Pertronix Performance Products now owns Smithy’s Mufflers along with Doug’s Headers, Patriot Exhaust Products, and JBA Performance Exhaust.

Designed for performance, Smithy’s Mufflers are now packed with a fiberglass wrap that is a better fiberglass quality to the wrap used in the old 1950s glasspack mufflers. Other than the higher quality wrap, Smithy’s Mufflers are built the same way as they always have been, right down to the blue paint. Features include double end cap construction and 3-1/2-inch hammertone finished cases to assure the original Smithy look.

Smithy’s Mufflers have focused on performance from the very beginning in the 1920s. These performance mufflers have long been a favorite of Hot Rodders for their aggressive and unique tone.

According to Don Lindfors, Director of Exhuaust Research and Development at Pertronix Inc., Smithy’s is “the world’s oldest performance muffler.” This makes it perfect for “resto-rod” or 1950’s custom builds. It’s the same muffler that the vintage Hot Rodders used in the 1950s and 1960s and Lindfors adds, “Yes, it’s still guaranteed not to blow out or leak.”

These are still manufactured with the classic Smithy’s look and unusual blue paint.

Smithy’s Muffler have a 2-inch inlet and outlet with a 3 1/2-inch diameter seamed steel case. They are available in 22-inch, 26-inch, or 30-inch case length. According to Lindfors, “Mufflers do not fall under any sort of legality issue for pollution control as they are considered a replacement part – anything after the catalytic converter is a non issue.”
