Small Block Chevy On A Diet: SCAT’s Excalibur Lightweight Crankshaft

From the very start, small block Chevy engines were designed to be super rev happy. A short stroke and large bore design and lighter weight let the very first 265 cubic inch engine make power up to 5,500 RPMs. This kind of power band was basically unheard of back in ’55, when the competitor’s flathead Ford V8s ran out of their power around three grand.

Fast forward to today and small block Chevys are being built to make power well over 7,000 RPM. One of the secrets to a high-revving small block: lightweight rotating assemblies. The lighter the rotating assembly, the faster it can spin, allowing vehicles to reach their ideal power band quicker. They also take less horsepower to rotate–improving power, acceleration and deceleration.

A great place to start your rotating assembly’s diet is with SCAT, a leading manufacturer of aftermarket crankshafts– who recently announced a new Excalibur Lightweight Crankshaft that weighs in just under 50 pounds.

Forged from 4340 steel, the cranks are precision-ground, heat-treated, and nitride-hardened for super wear resistance. They’re rough-balanced to 1,800 grams (within +/- 2 percent), and feature large journal radiuses. Their innovative oiling holes increase the amount of oil going from the mains to rod bearings, and eliminate burnt bearings.

Scat’s new Excalibur Lightweight Crankshafts are available in multiple configurations:

  • 3.480” stroke, 5.700” rod, 350 mains, internal balance
  • 3.480” stroke, 5.700” rod, 350 mains, front internal/rear external balance
