When you’re Rick Hendrick and on top of the Corvette world, just about anything is possible. That includes finding and restoring your very first Corvette, a 1963 C2 Stingray convertible. Hendrick sold his first Vette in order to finance buying his first dealership, a move most would consider worthwhile considering where it led him. Despite owning perhaps one of the world’s largest Corvette collections, just like everyone else, you always fondly remember that first car, just like your first girlfriend and first kiss.
However, when you are Rick Hendrick, you can do something about it. So 15 years ago, he set to find the car. After locating it and adding it to his stable, he eventually decided to restore it. And he went beyond a mere ground-up restoration. He bolted it to a new chassis with a brand-spanking new Corvette ZR1 LS9 supercharged 6.2L V8, making his original C2 into a gleaming modern restomod.
The unveiling took place at the National Corvette Museum, where Hendrick was being inducted into their Hall of Fame. Also on hand to take part in the unveiling was country singer Brad Paisley, who had been in town at the Bowling Green assembly plant watching (and helping build the engine) on his new 2016 C7 Corvette Z06.
So what happened to the original chassis on Hendrick’s first Corvette? Again, when you’re Rick Hendrick, anything is possible, so he had the chassis completely torn apart, chromed and painted and made into the main conference table in his office. It’s good to be the king!
