Corvette Grand Sport & Porsche 911 GT3 RS: Unexpected Rivals?

At first glance, lining up a Corvette and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS seems somewhat like an unfair comparison– I mean, come on, they have completely different chassis layouts and a huge (I mean huge) difference in price points. Nonetheless, the rivalry between these two has raged on for decades.

But, the new Grand Sport upped the Corvette game forever. Aside from being absolutely gorgeous, the Corvette has enjoyed monumental improvements power-wise within the last few years. Thinking back to YouTube video from Jay Leno, we remember him noting the Grand Sport may just be “the best bang for your buck” sports car on the market today. Duh.

Its 6.2-liter V8 pushes 460 horsepower, which is much less than its older brother, the 638 horsepower ZR1. But, these numbers didn’t scare it away– soon after its release, the two battled it out on the track, with the Grand Sport coming in less than a second slower than the ZR1. Not bad at all considering their near 200 horsepower difference; lets just say Chevy did it right with the Grand Sport.

But then, you turn to some of these impressive track-ready imports– one of the best (if not the best) being the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. We see the GT3 RS as apples to oranges when compared to the Corvette, but today… our minds have been somewhat, well, blown. With a 4.0-liter flat six under it’s hood pushing 500 horses, with a zero to 60 of a mere 2.9 seconds, the GT3 RS is a serious top-of-the-line track car.

Sport Auto recently announced track times for the two newly-found competitors, taken from the Formula One track, Hockenheimring. The Grand Sport came in with an extremely impressive time of 1 minute and 8.7 seconds. The GT3 RS: 1 minute 8.5 seconds. Yes, you read that correctly. The RS was only two-tenths of a second faster than the GS. What a grand achievement for those at Chevy. See what we did there?

But, the most obvious and monumental difference between the two: the price. As expected, the GT3 RS comes along with quite the price tag, with a starting MSRP of $175,900. That is if you can find one selling for MSRP which, realistically, you can’t. Then we turn to the Grand Sport… less than 70k, picked up at your local Chevrolet dealer– easy, cheap (in comparison), and only just two-tenths of a second slower than the $200,000 Porsche. The Corvette Z06 would eat this uppity, little German fritter in one bite…

“Bang for your buck” is an understatement and Corvette FTW.
