SEMA 2018: EBC’s New Two-Piece Rotors, Four And Six Piston Calipers

There are 10 teams that each fielded two cars in every Formula 1 race in 2018. Of those 10, seven are based in the United Kingdom. There’s a depth of engineering knowledge and experience in the UK unlike anywhere else. This is particularly true in what’s been named the Motorsports Valley, where the seven F1 teams are located. Also located in Motorsports Valley is high-performance braking component manufacturer EBC Brakes, which came to the SEMA Show to display several of its new products.

Two-Piece Full Floating Rotor

One of the most interesting items on display was EBC’s new two-piece full-floating brake rotors for motorsports and street applications. The driving force to develop its own rotors was the company’s belief that the best brake pad in the world used on a low-quality rotor with poor metallurgy will result in only average performance. This is due to the pad’s inability to deposit the ‘transfer layer’ onto the brake disc that is critical to optimizing high brake system performance.

Every rotor is cast from the G3500 high-grade disc alloy. Derived from its motorsports experience with a high-carbon and high-copper metallurgy, the G3500 disc alloy has superior thermal conductivity and heat-cycling durability. This provides for maximum brake rotor life and performance, particularly during harder driving or track driving. In fact, EBC’s G3500 rotors outperform most OE discs by a factor of over four-times in a standardized test of brake rotor resistance to disc cracking and crazing.

Unlike many other two-piece rotors, the EBC products come as pairs — right-hand and left-hand — so that the cooling vanes are operating in the correct direction for optimum cooling. Each rotor features 48 curved rotor vanes.

The center mounting bells used in EBC Brakes two-piece rotors are each precision machined from a billet of aerospace grade aluminum. This assures that they’re both strong and lightweight. The bells are then black anodized, providing a corrosion-resistant finish. It also allows the mounting bells to be re-used for lower long-term running costs.

In addition to friction materials, rotors, and calipers, EBC also manufactures its own line of high-quality brake hoses in England.

The EBC two-piece rotors are available in three forms:  1)- SG2F rotors that serve as a direct replacement for performance vehicles where 2-piece brake rotors are fitted as standard, like the R35 Nissan GT-R. 2)- The SG2FC two-piece floating rotor conversions that upgrade OEM one-piece cast iron rotors to performance two-piece floating alternatives, such as the Honda Civic Type R. All SG2FC conversions easily replace the OEM one-piece rotor and are designed to integrate with the OE caliper and pads with no vehicle modifications necessary. 3)- The SG2FK rotors that are included in EBC Brakes Racing’s Balanced Brake Kits.

Four and Six Piston Brake Calipers

EBC also debuted two new brake calipers:  four-piston and six-piston two-piece calipers. EBC Apollo brake calipers utilize a two-piece bolted design, fastened with 12.9-grade steel bolts for reinforcement of the caliper bridge section. Computer FEA analysis demonstrated that the use of high-tensile steel bolts provides significant improvements in caliper stiffness compared to a mono-block design.

Unlike the vast majority of gravity cast calipers, EBC Apollo Series caliper bodies are machined from heat treated low-pressure castings. Low-pressure casting is a more expensive production method than conventional gravity casting, but by forcing the aluminum alloy into the mold under pressure the consistency of the finished part is greatly improved. This gives EBC’s Apollo Series brake calipers a noticeable performance advantage over conventional gravity-cast calipers, exhibiting higher overall strength and a comparable caliper body stiffness to a forging.

Finally, unlike most painted calipers on the market, Apollo brake calipers do not receive a powdercoat finish. Powdercoat cracks and discolors with exposure to high heat. Instead, EBC finishes every caliper using an advanced high-temperature Teflon polyester coating process.

The four-piston Apollo calipers are available now and the six-piston Apollo calipers should be available in six-to-seven months.

Assorted Replacement and Upgrade Brake Pads

EBC Brakes offers a full line of pads ranging from OE replacement to full race.

In addition to the new products, EBC also displayed its line of brake friction material, including the Ultimax 2 OEM-replacement pads for discerning drivers who drive exclusively on the street. GreenStuff pads provide an upgrade over OEM pads with improved friction and fade resistance. Stepping up to the flagship YellowStuff pads provides the maximum improvement over OEM. For heavier vehicles, there’s the RedStuff line. EBC’s OrangeStuff pads have been developed to provide zero brake fade up to 1400 degrees F. BlueStuff pads provides the highest cold friction of any EBC pads, with exceptional cold bite and a temperature range that runs up to 1100 degrees F.
