SEMA 2016: Edelbrock’s E-Force Supercharger Design Changes

Edelbrock’s E-Force DP3C Supercharger on display at the 2016 SEMA Show.

Visiting the Edelbrock Performance booth at the SEMA tradeshow is always an eye-opening experience each year. The 50th anniversary SEMA Show was no different, as Edelbrock’s August Cederstrand showed us the new version of their E-Force superchargers.

“Last year we introduced the DP3C supercharger for the Mustang 5.0-liter Coyote engine. The big difference was that instead of having two monolithic brick intercoolers, we now have one giant intercooler across the entire lid,” he said.

“That means that the air comes in, blows through the intercooler where it goes around, then drops back down through the intercooler and into the engine. We increase the surface area by 45 percent by doing this,” he explained. “Which increases the horsepower potential by 33 percent with the same amount of boost.”

When it comes to the rotor package … size matters!

Increasing anything by 33 percent is impressive, but when you are talking about horsepower, you have everyone’s attention. August continued, “Going forward – not just with the Coyote engine, but the LS platform and the 6.4-liter Dodges, we are going to use this supercharger platform across the board.” Standing in the Edelbrock booth hearing all of this, put an gleam in our eyes. If that means 33 percent more power all around … we are all about the new intercooler design!

As excited as we were about the gains in horsepower potential with the new intercooler design, there was more to be uncovered. The E-Force superchargers were originally designed with 2,300cc Eaton rotor packs. August spilled the beans on another new upgrade coming soon.

“When we designed this original rotor housing, we got early word from Eaton that they were coming out with a 2,650cc rotor package,” he continued. “So we, in turn, designed a housing to accept that rotor package.”

“All we have to do is push one button to machine the 2,300 housing, or push another button to machine the 2,650 rotor package housing,” he said while pointing to the rotor housing. “Just this past weekend on the dyno, we bolted it to a 6.4-liter, Gen-III Hemi, and at a conservative eight pounds of boost on 91 octane, it hit 865 horsepower. Once we get back from SEMA, we’ll continue to develop it.”

Features Of The E-Force Superchargers Include:

  • Everything fits right out of the box, no welding, cutting, or grinding
  • Eaton rotor assembly
  • Self contained oil system (no drilling or plumbing required)
  • Electronic PCM programming module, with Stage 1 and Stage 2 application-specific tuning
  • High-Flow Mass Air Flow Sensor (as needed)
  • Little to no decrease in fuel economy
  • Limited powertrain warranty
  • Unique design allows maximum low-end torque and instant throttle response
  • 50-state emissions legal

We walked away from the Edelbrock display with a bit more pep in our step just knowing that 865 horsepower on a basically stock engine was close to being available. For more information on this or any of Edelbrock’s product lines, visit them at www.edelbrock.com
