SEMA 2015: TCI’s Single Disc Bolt-Together Converters, New Shifters

At last year’s SEMA show, TCI Automotive debuted a multi-disc torque converter design for late-model transmissions, and in an effort to round out the company’s torque converter lineup, they’ve released a new single-disc design at this year’s show for Ford’s 6R80, GM’s 4L60E, and 6L80 transmissions.

“This has the same premise of the dual-disc converter, but for lower-horsepower applications. You don’t need as much friction material, and it helps to keep the cost down for daily-driven musclecars and hotrods,” says TCI’s Trent Goodwin.

The CNC-machined bolt-together design uses a billet front cover that allows for easy rebuilds should one become necessary, along with permitting the ability to change the converter’s internals if the combination changes. Internally, there are woven-carbon friction material affixed to the clutch plate for solid power-handling capabilities, a billet turbine hub, billet lock-up piston, and billet 50-spline clutch hub. These are designed to bring some of the high-dollar race torque converter technology and bring it to the masses.

There are four part numbers for the 4L60E, three for GM’s 6L80, and four for the Ford 6R80.

Also new in the TCI booth this year are a pair of shifters — the redesigned Outlaw Blackout shifter and the Diablo shifter. The Outlaw piece offers an optional two-button design that allows compatibility for electronic shifting when used with the company’s EZ-TCU transmission controller — or they can be used control a transbrake, line-lock, or nitrous system.

The all-new Diablo shifter’s design works on all transmissions; two, three, four, and even six-speeds in both forward and reverse shift patterns are accommodated. It can also be upgraded to use the same two-button configuration as the Outlaw shifter to control a transbrake, nitrous, or the EZ-TCU. Only four shifter part numbers are in the book, as the base unit can be configured for all of the different transmission styles — the only options are the buttons and the cover.
