PRI 2011: Three Degrees Of Scat Crankshaft Performance

We’re not going to waste any time here, and just get straight to the matter at hand. Not every engine needs to make 1500hp. But, that’s not to say that 1,500hp is a bad thing, either. It’s just that many of us really don’t need all that much horsepower to be happy with our ride. That’s where Scat Crankshafts’ three (well, really four; but that’s for those ultimate performance guys come in) levels of crank performance come in.

Starting with Scat’s already super successful – and potent – Forged 4340 Standard Weight Crankshafts series, the average performance enthusiast walks away with Scat’s straight shot and chamfered oiling holes, lightening holes in all rod throws, large radii clearances on all journals as well as having each crank nitride hardened and heat treated and shot peened. Not too shabby, right?

Well, if that’s not enough to cook your turkey, Scat’s Lightweight Pro Comp cranks might do you one better. With everything listed above, these second-tier ‘shafts also include computer generated symmetrical counterweights for less rotating mass – which of course, reduces internal stress and flex. The Pro Comps also feature Scat’s aero wing counterweight edge design which drops windage, internal turbulence, and weight.

But wait, there’s more! Scat’s final entry is their Superlight Crankshafts, which include all of the good stuff listed above, but with even less weight to wing around inside your block. This process is completely computer designed and controlled and has been extensively tested both via computer, on the track and on the dyno. If you’re looking for RPMs, you’ve found the crank to do it with.
