The Big Easy is a place where people come from near and far to leave their worries (and sometimes, morals) behind. In popular culture, it’s a fantasyland of public intoxication, nudity, and general discord, especially since Hurricane Katrina left much of New Orleans underwater. The city is still a long way from completely recovering, and the city’s network of bayous and waterways remain a popular dumping ground for everything from lawn refuse to bodies.
[3]We may never know why or how this C5 Corvette ended up at the bottom of Bayou St. John, but the Times-Picayune reports [2] that New Orleans police pulled the Chevy sports car out of the water with little info on how it ended up there, or why.
More likely than not this was a car heist or joyride gone bad, and the inexperienced criminal simply couldn’t handle the high-powered Corvette. While some of us may be jaded enough to think 350 horsepower isn’t “that much,” to the average driver who has only ever driven a Honda Civic, LS power must seem like the end of the world. It’s very easy to lose control of a Corvette if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Add to that a number of canals and bayous that intersect many parts of New Orleans, many of which feature steep declines straight into the water, and you have a recipe for disaster. Witnesses whom the police interviewed said that a man who claims to have been driving the Corvette emerged from the water a short time later before fleeing the scene. Because that doesn’t sound suspicious…
