[1]We don’t have to tell you twice that the 2014 Corvette Stingray is one hot commodity. Even with production at full capacity, buyers walking into a Chevy dealership today will have to wait up to six months to take delivery on just a plain-jane, base-model Corvette. That’s a long time to wait for any car, and it only gets worse.
[2]According to GM Authority [3], sources deep inside the Chevy dealer network are saying that customers who place an order for a Corvette with the Z51 performance package will have to wait a year or more. It could take so long that these cars might technically be 2015 models.
What’s the holdup? Well there is already a six-month wait on regular Corvettes, but more than that approximately 75% of current orders are for the more-expensive Z51 package. While this is good news for GM, the take-rate is sure to drop off as the initial round of buyers cool their heels. Still, GM expects to sell at least 20,000 units in the first year, and has no plans to increase production output.
The Z51 package is designed with track racing in mind, adding an electronic limited-slip differential cooler, a dry-sump oil system, slotted brake rotors, and other features designed to enhance performance. With many initial Corvette buyers either investing in a collectible or a track toy, it seems like the early bird gets the Corvette, as it were. But from what we’ve seen and heard, the 2014 Corvette Stingray is well worth the wait.
