Video: Z06 Versus AMG SL65 on the Nurburgring

Being Americans, many of us lust after Germany’s Nurburgring like it’s a supermodel we will never get to meet. With well over one hundred bends, twists, and turns, covering a distance of 13 miles, it’s an automotive playground to those who like to push cars to the limit in the corners. [1]

We’ve covered a few LS-powered cars in the past going around the ‘Ring, even a WS6 [2], but we rarely get to see two cars go at it against each other like we do in this video. The two cars in this case are a C6 Z06 and a late-model AMG SL65 – the one with the twin turbo V-12, that puts out 604 horsepower. So on paper at least, a pretty good match for our favorite sports car.

What starts out as any other ‘Ring video of a car going around the circuit, erupts in a challenge of America vs. Germany on their own turf. In a case of automotive World War III, the American iron triumphs over the German, but the Merc doesn’t go down without a fight, refusing to let the Chevy pass at all costs.

Judging by the subtitles in the video (our friends in the Vette don’t speak English for us this time), the man in the Benz is an apparent French adversary known by the dynamic duo. While the video is over nine minutes long, only about three of those depict the German vs. American race.

Once the Benz is put permanently in the Vette’s rearview mirror, we get to see the Z06 make mincemeat out of a few hatchbacks and even a Porsche 911 – one that looks like could be a GT2 or GT3 in the few seconds that we get to see it. ‘Merica!
