Video: Weiner Wednesday AKA Good Corvettes Gone Bad – “Sickfish”

Just when you thought is was okay to go back in the water, up pops the wonderful, over-the-top “Sickfish” built by Joe Barra out of New York. He’s owned the car for 28 years and what started as a mild mannered 1972 Corvette roadster ended up one of the wildest customs ‘Vettes we’ve ever seen.

We thought we’d do a Weiner Wednesday on the car because it’s a text book example of the fine line we tread when casting beauty or value judgements on other people’s Corvettes. It can be a very tricky track.

Is this car garish? Yes. Over-the-top? Yes. Cliche’ and in questionable taste?  Yes.

And we love it.

For many folks, any Corvette is all of the above and we kind of dig that this car takes all of that ‘Vette-ness to the “nth” degree.  Can you imagine a frigid Volvo driver’s reaction when this thing blows by, rattles the windows and blows their cashmere scarf over their head?  LOVE IT.

We saw the car in person at Carlisle 2016 and it knocked us out. We wondered what car was creating such a buzz and then we got closer and holy moly.

Yes, all that gold plating is 24 carat. The taillights do spell out “wow” on both sides and the white and purple color combo is certainly not for the faint of heart.

The detail alone on the 502 big-block motor is some the wildest we’ve ever seen. It’s no trailer queen either. Barra claims it makes make 703hp at the crank and proves it with a thick, chalky burnout. Into his garage.

We say to each his own and thank-you Joe Barra, wherever you are, for reeling in “Sickfish” and doing it your way.

To hell with the critics.

AND, if you love it, it was for sale when we saw a year ago…
