Video: Roll Racing In A Tube Chassis Nitrous Huffing ‘Vette!

“Roll Racing” is not something we here at Dragzine cover often, as it generally doesn’t qualify as drag racing to us or our audience. However, our friends over at 1320Video recently shared this clip that goes a long way to bridge the gap between highway racing and genuine drag racing.

At the Street Car Takeover event in Oklahoma City, organizers introduced on-track roll racing, and one of the top competitors to try out this new hybrid top-end contest was running a legitimate tube-chassis Corvette drag car featuring a nitrous-injected small block and big meats out back.

Screen Shot 2015-08-12 at 11.18.43 AMFor those not familiar with roll racing, this is almost the exact polar opposite of how most cars are setup. The majority of highway racers have slammed suspensions, high-horsepower turbocharged powerplants, and low profile tires wrapped around tall, wide road wheels, as you can see from the cars this sinister black ‘Vette takes down in the video. While this approach to roll racing may be unorthodox, it clearly works, at least through the 1/4-mile, which is admittedly much shorter than most highway pulls, which are often held at 1/2-mile or full mile-long contests.

Regardless, it’s an awesome sight to see a full-on drag car rolling through the dry burnout box at Thunder Valley Raceway at speed and hitting the throttle from a rolling start and absolutely dominating the competition. As Street Car Takeover tours the country, it stands to reason other guys with full-on drag cars will see this and decide to try their hand at top-end racing, so maybe there will be more footage like this popping up soon. One can’t help but wonder if a big-inch nitrous car, or even a blown or boosted Pro Mod style hot rod would be able to hook without a burnout and make a run at the roll-racing class? That may end up making news for the wrong reasons, but somebody out there is just liable to try it!
