Video: On Board the C7.R With Tommy Milner At Daytona

At the Detroit Auto Show a few weeks ago GM revealed the Corvette C7.R race car [1], which made its racing debut last weekend at the 24 Hours of Daytona [2]. From Detroit to the race track, the Corvette Racing team helped make history as the United SportsCar Championship began its very first competition, with the pair of C7.R Corvettes leading the way for much of the race.

Now you can feel like part of the action, thanks to this helmet camera video from Tommy Milner, taken during a testing session prior to the 24 Hours of Daytona. No silly rock music, no commercial breaks, and no engineers to interrupt the delectable sound of the C7.R’s 5.5 liter V8 engine roaring around the race track.

The video almost looks unreal to be honest, as blue ambient lighting casts a pale glow onto the sophisticated racing equipment that would look just as at home in a sci-fi spaceship. The steering wheel looks like a video game controller, and there’s a rear-facing camera with blind spot monitoring that flashes a big orange arrow any time a car is hidden out of view. Brilliant.

But the real draw here is the unfiltered sound of a roaring 5.5 liter V8 engine built specifically for racing. Unbridled and at wide-open throttle, this 15-minute video (including a pit stop!) literally puts you in the driver’s seat, at least virtually. We don’t imagine anything compares to the real deal, and it makes us more than a little jealous that people like Tommy Milner get paid to do this job.
