Video: “Faces of GM” Behind the Scenes at GM Desert Proving Ground

When it comes to creating the Corvette, the car goes through a lot of tests to make sure it is safe and can take the beating drivers will inevitably give it while thrashing on the gas pedal. One such test takes place out in the desert of Yuma, Arizona at the GM Desert Proving Grounds. Although it sounds like a hot job, I don’t think I’d mind working all day behind the wheel of the Corvette like GM Test Engineer Tom Norkiewicz does in the “Faces of GM” video recently posted on CorvetteBlogger.com [1]. In fact, I’ll volunteer for the job right now.

Norkiewicz has been testing cars for some 22 years now and has definitely learned the ropes when it comes to testing sports cars like the Corvette. With plenty of crafty driving maneuvers up his sleeve, Norkiewicz helps test for heat related issues under the hood, in the cabin and on the underbody of GM cars like the Corvette, as well as develop their ride control systems. Obviously, this means Norkiewicz gets plenty of seat time behind the wheel of GM cars and the training Corvette featured in the video.

While the job seems demanding, it’s not all work and no play. Norkiewicz makes that clear by throwing in a couple stunt maneuvers at the end of the video. Take a look at the “Faces of GM” video below and tell us what you think about Norkiewicz’s job. [2]
