Based on the production LS7 engine, building a GT-2 class race engine for the ALMS Corvette Racing team actually shares a lot of common ground with the way factory Z06 mills are put together. In Episode 2 of Track to Street, we see just what that means.
According to Corvette chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, “Behind the scenes, the race team and the production car team have grown closer together, finding numerous ways to support each other and to make both cars better. Most automotive companies give lip service to claims like ‘racing improves the breed’ or ‘race on Sunday, sell on Monday’. For team Corvette, it is a daily reality.”
The processes appear to work out well, as both Corvettes made it through the 12 Hours of Sebring, with the #03 Compuware Corvette C6.R driven by Tommy Milner, Olivier Beretta and Antonio Garcia finishing in third place, just 49 seconds behind the leader.
The #4 Corvette C6.R, driven by Oliver Gavin, Jan Magnussen and Richard Westbrook, overcame a three-lap deficit after an accident at the two-hour mark and finished in fourth place, one lap down.
