Video: Corvette C7 Z06 Drag Races a Lamborghini Gallardo

New taillights look good pulling away.

As Corvette fans, it’s kind of an unwritten rule that stuffy European sports cars are for folks with too much money and not enough sense. The thought of an oil sheik in London with five Ferraris shipped in from Bahrain is boring to say the least. Not to mention a mid-year Vette has more “cool” in the soot of its exhaust than many foreign sports cars.

This brings us to this video of a drag race between a C7 Z06 and a Lamborghini Gallardo. The Corvette trumps the Lambo’s 570 hp V10 with the supercharged LT4 small block producing 650 hp, though the Vette tips the scales a tick heavier than the mid-engine Italian.

What we have here is two rolling start drags with a victory going to each car. The first run is a nice view of the new Vette’s controversial taillights and if there is still any discussion on this issue, please see them disappearing from view in the first run. The LT4 sounds truly ferocious as it rips through the gears.

The second run goes to the Gallardo and its raspy V10. The Z06 keeps up but the Lambo was strong out of the gate and ultimately pulls away, its exhaust wailing into the night.

The “honk-honk-honk” start routine is dubious and leaves a lot of margin for error. As we’ve seen with that goofy Challenger Hellcat vs. Tesla vid, the driver’s ability to launch the car and shift at peak power is still a critical element of racing and is demonstrated here by the two different wins.

Regardless of the victories, the age old Corvette value equation still stands. While the Gallardo is no longer produced, its successor, the Huracán starts around $240,000 while the Z06 is a mere $78,995 in comparison. With the $160K left over you could ship your Z06 off to Hennessey or Lingenfelter and have them breathe on the LT4 (solving any discrepancies once and for all), and STILL have a down payment for a house.

Corvette for the win.
