The guys at 510 Race Engineering [1] in Tomball, Texas, are all graduates of the School of Automotive Machinists technical school in the Houston area, so it’s safe to say that they are no strangers to making horsepower. The exploits of the S.A.M. racing teams are well-known in both the Ford world, where they’ve competed in the NMRA’s Hot Street and NMCA’s Pro Stock classes in their Mustang, along with the LS Shootout’s All Motor class in their Camaro. So when the 510 Race Engineering team put together a Vortech-supercharged 2011 Corvette Grand Sport for a customer and took it to the dragstrip, it wasn’t hard to guess that the car would run pretty darned good.

[3]The car made over 630 horsepower and 560 ft./lbs. of torque on the 510 dyno at only 9 PSI of boost, an inkling of what might happen at the track. Helping the car to get there is a set of Kooks 1 7/8″ long tube headers, an LS9 camshaft, and a Circle D torque converter. That’s a big number to try and tame at the track, especially when the car is wearing 19-inch wheels and street rubber.
After a nice big smoky burnout, the 1.67 short time on the street tires is pretty stout and the car rips through the big end with a minimum of muss and fuss. The 10.36 at over 132 MPH is a very respectable performance for a real street car – the 510 boys report that the Corvette even gets over 24 MPG. We imagine the car’s owner must be quite pleased with the results, but they also say they’re looking for nines out of this car. We’ll be watching to see if they make it.
