Drag strips bring out the competitive edge in everyone. After all, there’s nothing quite like an open pad of pristine groomed asphalt to take out a grudge against a buddy or arch nemesis. But just like anywhere, things can go bad in an instant when you mix horsepower, adrenaline and head-to-head competition on the track – something that a driver of a Nissan 350Z and his girlfriend found out the hard way when a friendly $20 race against a C5 Corvette took a turn for the worst. Check out the jarring footage we found on YouTube above.
The video was shot at a Test-N-Tune event at the Jefferson Pageland Dragstrip in Pageland, South Carolina in July. What starts out as shaky footage of the racers lining up from inside the 350Z turns into crash cam central when at about the 35-second mark the Corvette loses control.
In a matter of two seconds, the Nissan is t-boned, jarring the passengers and throwing the phone that was being used to record the race onto the floorboard.
Even viewed from the safety of your computer screen, the footage will still get your heart pounding as the Corvette aims straight at the camera for the consequent hit. Obviously a little unnerved, the passenger can be heard reacting to the crash although the driver of the Z isn’t quite as shaken as you might expect.
Instead of cussing up a storm or freaking out about his car like some of us would do, including myself, the driver of the Z can be heard saying that the other driver owes him $20. From the sounds of it, we think the driver of the Corvette is going to owe him a bit more than that.
Hopefully you’ve never been in a crash like this on the drag strip and never will be. We’re just glad that all parties in this accident seemed to have fared rather well, considering.
