Track times are like fishing tales. Before you know it, you’re faster than Mario Andretti and caught Moby Dick on a bamboo pole. Looks like the guys over at HorsepowerKings reported that a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, with the eight-speed automatic and Z07 package lapped the Nürburgring in under seven-minutes, making it faster than a lot of heavy hitters from around the globe, like the Viper and Nissan GT-R, not to mention the Porsche 918 Spyder which just squeezed in under the seven-minute mark.
Verifying such claims can be difficult and Chevy’s Monte Doran says the quoted HorsepowerKings times are not confirmed by GM or Chevrolet, and relays the only official lap time for the Z06 is 2:41 around Virginia International Raceway. He went on to say “Any one – a manufacturer, a journalist, a guy standing on the fence of the Ring – can claim a lap time. As such, we think the in-car video is essential to proving a time is real and credible, and Chevrolet will not release a lap until we have a video to substantiate the claim.”
Fast Nürburgring times are good for PR and publicity and one would think ”good ink” for the mega-hit C7. Chevrolet’s reluctance to jump on this bandwagon might be a sign they’re familiar with their own car and are skeptical of those times. Rumors (again from HorsepowerKings) suggest the Z06 needs some more tweaking with reports of “heat soak, horsepower-limiting ECU and undersized roots blower…” Hopefully this will spur our Vette gurus to get back over to Germany and get to bottom of this.
Real or false, HorsepowerKings is probably trending like never before. They say video proof is coming soon which reminds us of an old saying, “Never believe anything you hear and only 50% of what you read,” and that was before the internet.
