The General Keeps Expanding With New Performance And Racing Facility

General Motors has been undergoing a lot of facility expansion as of late, and one of the most recent additions to their ever-growing collection of cutting-edge development and production centers is a brand new performance and racing facility.

With doors open since February 2nd, the center is, as GM worded it, “a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance the development processes for the company’s diverse racing engine programs.” It constitutes a large portion of GM’s 200 million dollar-investment into the Pontiac Powertrain center in Pontiac, Michigan, adding a total of 111,420 square-feet and 100 new staff members.

One of the largest benefits of this new facility is its ‘clean-sheet’ design, allowing it to utilize all of the absolute latest equipment and technology. These enhancements include 10 new engine-building bays – with state-of-the-art, specialized tools; advanced machinery like laser scanning equipment, 3D printers and CNC machines; four AVL engine dyno cells, including two for gas-powered engines, one for a gas-powered driveline, and one for an electric-powered driveline; and an electronics lab equipped with incredible calibration systems.

Needless to say, GM definitely went all out with this Powertrain Performance and Racing center, which really opens the door for some exciting, powerful new advancements in GM’s performance capabilities. But what makes this incredible new facility especially exciting is the fact that the General’s racing and production development have always gone hand in hand. As such, this center is not only the home for research and development of GM’s competitive racing endeavors, but is where Chevy’s high-performance crate engines and crate powertrain systems will be developed.

As GM’s Global Powertrain vice president Dan Nicholson stated, “we race to win and learn. This new facility offers unprecedented opportunities to connect our racing engineers and powertrain engineers, integrating their knowledge to give our racers an edge on the track and our customers better vehicles on the road.”

Potentially, this facility could raise the bar for Chevy’s production and crate-package performance in a serious way. And who knows, perhaps it will play a role in the development of the elusive-but-supposedly-confirmed mid-engine Corvette. Only time will tell.
