The DP Konica Minolta – Corvette Disqualified From The Rolex 24

Long Beach Grand Prix, Long Beach, CA. (Photo by Brian Cleary)You may have recently read an article in which Corvette Online was able to witness the awesome victory by Corvette Racing at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. While the others may have missed some of the spotlight, a couple of the Corvette Daytona Prototype teams did quite well in the race too.

Specifically, the #10 Konica Minolta Daytona Prototype (DP) owned by Wayne Taylor Racing which earned a third in class, and third overall. Not a bad finish, especially for an endurance race, but their celebration and podium finish were short lived.

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) is the governing body in charge of managing the safety and rules of such races, in addition to a host of other responsibilities. Unfortunately for the #10 DP Corvette, they violated one of the IMSA’s rules regarding the amount of time a driver may have behind the wheel during an endurance race. The rule states that any given driver of a particular team may only drive for four hours out of each six hour period, and this is where the team ran into some trouble.

When Jordan jumped out of the #10, his brother Ricky Taylor hopped in and sped out of the pits. They were then required to pull back in and serve a penalty for entering pit lane while it was officially closed, but Ricky was able to keep their car in the number three spot.

While the team ultimately realized their error and tried to correct their error, they were still in violation of the four hour rule, and were ultimately moved from third place to 53rd, last place. Not an easy pill to swallow by any means, but perhaps their final moments of honesty did not go unnoticed. Traditionally IMSA could strip all points from the team making it a full disqualification, but decided to simply bump them into last place allowing them to at least collect some points for their participation in the event.

The loss of points isn’t a great start, but considering their level of success in the first race of the 2015 TUDOR series, the team should have plenty of future opportunities to make up the points and be in contention for the championship.

This may not have been the greatest day in racing for the Konica Minolta DP Corvette, but they were able to give up their third place spot to a fellow Corvette team. The #90 Daytona Prototype Corvette was able to take their spot, at least keeping the points amongst the Corvette family.

Additionally, Corvette Racing’s C7.R which won their own GT LeMans class, was able to move into fourth overall, quite impressive when you’re running amongst Daytona Prototypes in addition to the rest of the field.

Ultimately everybody went home to race another day, and that is all we can really ask for.
