To put a spin on the old saying, Mid America Motorworks believes that when it comes to exhaust, it’s different notes for different folks–some prefer mild to make the ride more enjoyable, others prefer aggressive to make their presence known wherever they go, and still others opt for a happy medium.
With the ever-expanding growth of aftermarket products for Corvettes, consumers had several options to pick from when it came time for an upgrade. Beyond simple looks and sheer performance numbers, people began to treat the sound of the exhaust as the ultimate make-or-break factor. Trouble was, without first buying and installing parts to hear it for oneself, a man would have little in the way of knowing which product was right for him.
Enter Mid America, which made the process simple by way of the IAC (Idle, Acceleration, and Cruise) Chart that assigned numbers and colors to different kits to help simplify the process. Testing and evaluation was done by an R&D team that worked at Mid America, and took several months to compile and sort out for user-friendliness.
Currently, only two generations of Corvette–the C5 and C6–are covered by Mid America’s helpful charts, but they are quite inclusive thanks to the testing the team performed on competing systems. Rated from 1 (slightly louder than stock) to 3 (aggressively loud), prospective exhaust buyers may find their subjective definitions of noise level different from that of the testing group from MAM, but by and large, the ratings scale is in tune with that of the average Joe.
