Shawn Fink’s Corvette Ready For Drag Week After Testing Crash

Everybody has a plan for their race day until the tree drops, then things can change quickly for the positive. Or the negative.

Shawn Fink fell victim to the negative side of things while testing with his nasty LSX-powered Drag Week C5 Corvette when he had a dust-up with a wall. Most people would have thrown in the towel for the year, but Fink enlisted the help of Mickey’s Chassis Works and they were able to turn the car around in about a week, to get things prepared for the annual event that kicks off in just over a week.

Vette 2Fink purchased his evil-looking Corvette as a project that was nearly finished, and then had the car torn to nothing so it could be built to his needs of Drag Week competition. The 427 cubic inch LSX mill is filled with all kinds of great parts and topped off with a pair of LS7 Warhawk heads and a Hogan’s sheet metal intake. Feeding the boost to the mill is just a single 118mm Precision turbo. Fink’s goal is to be the first six-second, LSX-powered Drag Week racer, and with this combo that shouldn’t be an issue.

The plan of Drag Week glory was nearly dashed for Fink during an unfortunate accident during a test session for the Armageddon no-prep event. Mickey Tessneer ran into Fink before the event at a local car wash and told him to give him a call if he needed anything; little did Tessneer know how quickly that favor would be called in.

“Fink called me that night and said he crashed the car and needed to leave it with us to get repaired while he went back to Wyoming. I had about one week to rebuild the back half, redo the tin work, re-mount the chutes, replace damaged body panels and much more,” explains Tessneer about the tall order he had in front of him.

Vette 3Tessneer and his team of Ron Plummer, Allen Beverly, and Camrin Bull got to work repairing the wounded race car and were eventually joined by Fink and his son. Lots of hard work and many hours paid off as the Corvette was finished and back at Thunder Valley for the Armageddon race, and even won a round of racing.

Look for Fink and his Corvette to be on the road for Drag Week in 2015, trying to get that six-second time slip. Having run in the 4.40 range in testing, it shouldn’t take much to reach that goal.
