Scarab Club Celebrates Corvette Design

Detroit’s Scarab Club is putting on a very cool automotive design exhibit, American Dreaming; Corvette, 7 Generations & Beyond, January 4 – February 9, 2017.

The show celebrates the Corvette as the definitive American sports car and will be showing rare designs from the drawing boards of designers, creative directors and students — from the beginning to the present.

American Dreaming curators John Douglas Peters and Robert Edwards spent the past year organizing the artwork and catalog. This exhibit is the first of its kind and will honor designers who rarely get wide-spread recognition. Further the curators seek to celebrate the art form Detroit claims as its own –- automotive concept art.
The three part show features rare vintage concept drawings from General Motor’s Corvette Studios, a design competition open to current transportation design students, and an exhibition of Corvette advertising art from the 50s – 90s.

The Mid-Century Corvette Concept Art

This part of the show displays the many Corvette concepts—these are the designs that we “thrown against the wall,” to see if they’s stick.  Most didn’t, but it’s good fun to see the evolution of a car we love. Automotive design studios were the enclaves of talented visionaries who produced thousands of sketches for each car model. The art they created were trade secrets and routinely destroyed as company policy dictated. Very little of Corvette concept art exist today. This exhibition includes the best examples from private collections and General Motors Design Archives and Special Collections

The Student Competition is themed Mid-Engine Corvette Conceptualization

Students from the leading transportation design schools including College for Creative Studies – Detroit, Lawrence Technological University – Southfield, and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Judges include Jay Leno, Robert Cumberford, & Bill Robinson. Cash prizes will be awarded. All entries will be exhibited.

Corvette Advertising Art – The Secreto Collection

Romancing car buyers with beautiful, evocative images was the goal of advertising artists, photographers and writers. Examples of Corvette advertising will be exhibited from the collection of Detroit Photographer Jim Secreto.

The Scarab Club, whose founding members, who came from Detroit’s newly formed automotive industry, can take pride in honoring its roots and furthering the acceptance of automotive concept art as a Detroit art form and as fine art.
