Recap: Rumors About GM’s Fabled Mid-Engine Halo Car

For a vast amount of time now, the myth of the mid-engined ‘Vette has been in the air. There’s been no shortage of speculation and rumors, and with dozens of theories and renderings knocking around the internet, the tension is growing thick. Lately however, despite the many previous denials, it’s once again looking like it could become a reality.

For those attempting to follow along, the story of the mid-engine Corvette has been a rollercoaster ride of excitement and letdowns- especially in the last year or so.

The bulk of commotion over Chevy’s prospective halo car started back in October of last year, when GM’s head of global production, Mark Reuss, confirmed that the C8 Corvette is in the works, and has an expected release date of 2017.

Based on both statements from Chevy and on the current progression of the automotive world in general, fans made hopeful deductions that this C8 could be the manifestation of the age-old mid-engine Corvette concept.

From there, optimism only continued to rise. In January of this year, it reached its peak with the discovery of GM’s supposed-C8 test mule. Spy shots were captured of the Ute-Corvette-Camino frankenstein and, once laid bear on the internet, seemed to basically confirm that the next Corvette will be mid-engined.

However, the fun was spoiled back in March when Corvette head-engineer Tadge Juechter denied the existence of a mid-engine ‘Vette. Some took this announcement at face value, whereas others speculated that it was simply a marketing maneuver – helping set the stage for the mid-engine ‘Vette’s showstopping release.

Recap Mid Engine Vette 01

This rendering was one of the first to arise.

Following that was GM’s trademark of the ‘Manta Ray’ name in June. There were a number of theories as to what GM had planned for the name, including it being used for a trim package, for a C7 variant, and of course, for the title of the elusive mid-engined halo car. However, they’ve had their lips sealed regarding its true purpose, so only the future will tell.

Then, in the latest upset, Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen seemed to inadvertently confirm that there will after all be a mid-engined Corvette platform. In an interview, de Nysschen commented on the viability of a mid-engined Corvette platform as a base for future Cadillac performance cars. This was a bit of a twist in the mid-engine ‘Vette story, as it may turn out that the car will wear Cadillac’s badging instead of Chevrolet’s.

And of course, over the past year of announcements and rumors, there have also been numerous renderings made and passed around the internet – adding to the slew of rumors and confusion about the potential car.

For the time being, de Nysschen’s comments on a possible mid-engine Corvette platform are the latest we’ve heard. Whether the car will reach production in the next few years as the promised C8, whether it will be a Cadillac or a Corvette, and whether it will exist at all are pretty much uncertain at this point. What we do know, however, is that – at the very least – we’ve been teased with the idea a lot lately, and the possibility that we will indeed be seeing a mid-engined Corvette platform is very real.

What do you think? Do you believe that GM or Cadillac will finally pull the trigger and give us a long-desired mid-engined super car? Or do you think these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt? Let us know in the comments below.
