Original 454 Corvette Engine Block For Sale

This numbers-matching 454 BBC from a 1974 Corvette is a restorer's dream.

This 454ci block from a 1974 Corvette is a restorer’s dream.

Hardcore rodders and restorers know that when you’re restoring a car to factory condition, just getting the right size engine isn’t good enough-it’s got to be numbers matching. To do it right, we’ll even go for parts that require a good deal of restoration and cleaning work prior to installation. It doesn’t matter if they’re more expensive, a correct resto means using the right parts before buying something “off the shelf” that will fit. This original and correct Chevy 454ci engine block is a prime example.

Rust shouldn't be an issue for the buyer of this block. Bead blasting or tumbling should be all that's needed to clean it right up.

The date codes on the block (A-10-74) identify it as having been built on January 10, 1974. The casting number (3999289) is correct for Vettes made during model year 1974. As you can see from the pictures, it’s a four bolt main engine. Original ad here.

The block has been bored .100 over stock, and you can tell by the pictures that it sat for a while. However, you can also tell by the pictures that it’s in great shape. Bead blasting or tumbling should remove the light surface rust that can be seen in the pictures.

The only “oddity” on it is a small patch that’s been welded to the rear of the block. The owner says that this patch is known as a reinforcement plate and was used to strengthen the block for racing applications. The patch does not detract from the authenticity of the block or how it works. The asking price for this rare find is $300. If you’re in the Milton, PA area, or can pay for shipping, this is the block you’ve been looking for to finish that 1974 Corvette restoration project.
