Mecum Auctions plans to kick off 2012 the right way with their massive event in Kissimmee, Florida, scheduled for January 24th through 29th. Mecum will celebrate its 25th year in business by bringing nearly 2000 top quality collector cars across the auction block, including some very important pieces of Corvette history.
President Dana Mecum says, “Since the final gavel fell at last year’s event, enthusiasts and collectors have been anxiously awaiting our larger-than-life Kissimmee Auction, which we have expanded once again to encompass six full days. We are off and running with an incredible inventory of cars for this year’s event, including a staggering group of investment-grade Corvettes, muscle cars.”
The Kissimmee Mecum event will be showcasing an auction that will likely be of great interest to all of you vintage Corvette fans. At the event, the legendary 1961 Gulf Oil Corvette Race Car that was an SCCA B-Production National Champion will cross the auction block. The car was originally ordered by Don Yenko for the Vice President of Gulf Oil, Grady Davis, and was driven by the famous “Flying Dentist”, Dr. Dick Thompson on its SCCA championship campaign. The car features a fuel injected 283/315 HP powerplant, a Borg Warner four speed, and a Positraction rear end, as well as heavy duty suspension and brakes.
Earlier this year the car earned the 2011 NCRS American Heritage Award and has been featured as a part of the Bloomington Gold Special Collection, as well as being an inductee into the Corvette Hall of Fame and the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame.
