LSX Challenge Bradenton 2013 Same Day Coverage


The 2013 Chevy Performance LSX Challenge series kicks off this weekend in Bradenton, Florida, and we’ll be bringing you updates and photos all weekend long! This event marks the first of four races this year, the Challenge’s second full season. Three heads-up classes and two index categories will battle it out on the dragstrip, and the quickest and fastest LS-powered cars and trucks in the country will be on-hand to see how high the bar can be raised for Chevy performance.

Mike Meeks and his 5th Generation LSx Camaro has added water injection to the killer setup. Water Injection cools the combustion chambers up to 200 degrees opening up the tuning window significantly. By making this single addition they are able to kick the timing to 10* rather than their normal 12*. A 1/4 mile pass only takes approximately 3 ounces of water. He skipped testing and the first run this weekend will be in LSx Drag Radial qualifying.

Steve Balusik is running this1965 Buick Skylark based out of Tarpon Springs, Florida with an LQ9 LS style engine he sourced from a Caddy Escalade in a junkyard. The 364 ci engine has been swapped to a carburetor with an Edlebrock Victor Jr. Intake and 950 CFM Holley. The factory heads were CNC ported by Texas Speed with valve actuation from a custom grind hydraulic roller cam from EPS. Steve purchased the car bone stock and replaced the front and rear suspension with 1971 parts and rear housing and a TH200 overdrive transmission from a Grand National. His best run is a 10.29 on nitrous though he will be running the 11.00 Index in the LSX Rumble as well as Tremek True Street.

This 430 Cube Nitrous Corvette C5 with Powerglide is out of Indiana and running NMCA Real Street class. Driving it this weekend is Rodney Massengale and the owner is Al Brodback. Pictured right. Ron Belcher out of Lexington is running Real Street with his nitrous sprayed 427 cubic inch motor with a Powerglide transmission. Pictured left.

Ebony and Ivory in the pits. This pair of Trans Am's are waiting to get some runs in before qualifying in what's looking to be a good turnout of LSx cars here this weekend.

Round One Qualifying Results

Andy Essary put his 2002 trans Am on the pole in LSX Drag Radial with a 7.482 @ 190.11 a nice run for the Lombard, Illinois based racer.

Anthony Manna brought his 1998 Camaro down from Elkgrove, Illinois for LSX Drag Radial. His 7.60 @ 163 was good for second of four cars today.


Rodney Massengale leads LSX Real Street with an 8.566 @ 159.15 MPH ahead of Ron Belcher.

Greg Delaney put the Baskin Racing 2010 Camaro on the pole in All Motor with a clean 8.432 @ 164.32 besting Judson Massingill's School of Automotive Machinists 99 Camaro and Robert Strong's Monte Carlo.

NMCA regular Rob Farley brough the familliar Corvette down from Old Bridge, New Jersey to compete in the LSX Rumble running an 11.64 on the 11.50 Index. Just a little more power tomorrow should have him dialed in.


Derek Putnam brough his daily driver out to run the Rumble as the engine in his "Boulevard Boost" Nova isn't quite finished up.
