Looks like the end is near for Jeff Gordon’s NASCAR career as he recently announced that 2015 will be his last full-time racing season. He’s had a good run while making himself a rich man, and for most of us the next stop would be a lifetime of cool cars, leisure, and relaxation.
But you don’t come off years of a literal speed addiction without a withdrawal period. So what do you do next if you’re superstar Jeff Gordon? Well, he tipped his hand recently at NASCAR’s Media Day and told reporters he’d like to compete in an occasional endurance race or two after he turns in his NASCAR card.
A natural next step considering his affiliation with Corvette aficionado Rick Hendrick is offering his services to the successful Corvette Racing team. Gordon said, “I love seeing those Corvettes in the 24-hour race in Daytona,” Gordon said. “I think that’s very cool and I’d love to be a part of that. Chevrolet has been a huge part of my Cup career.”
He’s already dipped his toe in the waters with Wayne Taylor Racing in the 2007 Rolex 24 with Corvette Racing driver Jan Magnnussen, Taylor, and Max Angelelli in a Riley-Pontiac Daytona Prototype.
It’s an exciting time to be Jeff Gordon as he can create his post retirement career anyway he wants. He can follow the lead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. who crossed over to race Corvettes in 2001. If Gordon gets his wish, he can bring his fan base over to Corvette Racing making it a win-win for everybody. All images CorvetteRacing.com
