Elaine Larsen, and husband Chris Larsen, started Larsen Motorsports out of their garage years ago and now have built their way up to designing and building their very own jet dragsters, as well as creating a world-class all-women jet dragster racing team.
Chris, the mastermind behind this company, is an airplane mechanic who acquires used fighter plane engines from all over the world to put into these custom-built vehicles. He explains the engines that are primarily used are Pratt and Whitney J60s and General Electric J85s, which are currently being phased out of the military fairly quickly.
Elaine is now a two-time world jet dragster racing champion, boasting roughly a 6 second quarter-mile time. It’s not rare to see her hit over 300 miles per hour.
Television star, Jay Leno, recently took a trip to Larsen Motorsports in Orlando, Florida to get a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of these insane vehicles and meet the world-famous jet dragster driver.
After his tour of Larsen Motorsports, Elaine offered Jay Leno her daily driver, a C6 Corvette, so he can race her down the strip to show just how fast the jet dragster is by comparison — although it would have probably been a fairer fight if she had allowed Leno to bring his own car from his extensive collection. Even when given a 7 second head start, Elaine’s dragster flies by the C6 like it was standing still. The C6 goes on to run a respectable 12.95 at 111.9 mph — which is not bad, but it still could be better even in stock form. One of the video’s comments on YouTube sums up our thoughts exactly, “How amazing would it be to be doing 111 mph and get passed like you’re in reverse?” Track officials report the dragster was going over 150 miles per hour faster at the finish.
Jay Leno says, “Corvette’s got some work to do,” and we agree.
