Movie trailers are often hard to judge. Did they just take the best 30 seconds out of the whole film? Is there stuff in there that didn’t actually make the final cut? Is there a voiceover from some Don Lafontaine wannabe that begins with, “In a world where…”?
The trailer for the indie film “The Red Corvette” seems to have everything you’d want in a thriller. Drugs? Check! Gangland executions? Check! Lesbians? Check! But then there are some warning flags, like the fact that despite the titular C6 Corvette, the clothing, music, and shot-on-VHS-C video quality give it a very 1985 feel.
Shot for a reputed budget of just $25,000, IMDB provides the following synopsis:
“Meet Cindy Reese, a suburban high school senior, who is burdened with more than her fair share of teenage angst. Utterly friendless, she longs for the day when she can graduate and leave all her troubles behind. It won’t be easy though, as a rival of hers causes her to fail for the year. Cindy is forced to enroll in Summer School, where she finds herself seated next to the extremely sultry, yet emotionally volatile, and the daughter of a reputed mob boss, Bella Fagone. The two immediately bond then Cindy’s staid suburban life is turned upside down. Watch as Bella introduces her new-found protege to the seedy and oftentimes dangerous world of her NYC night life, a world filled with sex, drugs, and eventually cold-blooded murder. Combining nonstop excitement and sensual intrigue, “The Red Corvette” will take you on a ride you won’t soon forget!”
Let’s hope that Cindy is over 18, shall we? Otherwise there’s another dimension to this that we’d rather not explore… Though it garners a rating of 4.8 out of 10 stars on IMDB, it was an “Official Selection” for the 2012 Philadelphia Independent Film Festival.
