How Turn One’s Flow Restrictor Can Improve Steering Performance

We tend to think of sports cars as a complete package from the factory, vehicles that are ready for all the stresses that high performance driving can dish out. The truth is that most automobiles, high performance or not, are designed around an assumption of where the manufacturer expects most of its use will be – commuting and sitting in traffic. That’s logical for most street cars, but what about those of us who actually track our cars?

The brake system and engine cooling get the majority of the attention when it comes to track prep, but your car’s power steering system is also an integral piece of the puzzle as well, and one that’s often overlooked. The folks at Turn One are here to address some of the most common questions that enthusiasts have when it comes to power steering.

Why does my pump expel fluid out of the cap during high performance driving events (autocross, road racing, oval track racing, etc)?

2This is caused by the pump overheating. The reservoir has a calculated air volume to compensate for fluid expansion. Under normal driving conditions, the fluid will only reach a certain temperature and a given amount. When the system is run too hard, the pump overheats the fluid and the fluid expands beyond the calculated air volume in the reservoir. This causes the system to purge the fluid out of the valve in the cap.

How do I fix my system over heating problem?

All Turn One pumps are designed to reduce horsepower consumption, which in turn reduce fluid temperatures. In most applications, fluid temperatures will be significantly reduced to alleviate over heating issues and problems.

What is different about a Turn One pump compared to my factory pump?

Turn One starts with a new OEM pump and modifies the internal components to reduce horsepower consumption. This, in turn, also reduces fluid temperatures.

What is a flow restrictor and what does it do?

The flow restrictor reduces the output flow of the pump by decreasing the orifice size in the fitting. By doing this, it increases the steering effort and gives you a more positive feel in the steering wheel. When done properly, reducing the flow does not adversely affect pump operation.

How do I install a flow restrictor?

4The Turn One flow restrictor is designed to replace the factory restrictor. To install the restrictor, you first must remove the factory restrictor. The factory restrictor is the unit which the high pressure line interfaces with the pump. Using a 22mm socket/wrench, unscrew the factory restrictor and install the Turn One flow restrictor in its place. Tighten the new restrictor to 40 ft-lbs.CAUTION: When removing the factory restrictor, there is a spring loaded plunger behind the restrictor. If the plunger and spring fall out of the pump, install the spring first and then install the plunger with the hex-nut end first.
