GM CEO’s Vintage ’58 Vette Brings in $270,000 for Charity

The joy of purchasing a vintage Corvette can only be topped off by one thing- when the proceeds from the sale are going to good causes. Lucky for bidders at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, that’s exactly what they found with the collection of Chevy performance vehicles being auctioned off all for charitable causes. Among the vehicles in the charity collection was GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson’s 1958 283/245 Corvette aiming to raise money for a neighborhood in the heart of America’s Motor City. Now, thanks to Akerson and Barrett-Jackson, the Morningside Commons area in Detroit will receive a revamp starting with $270,000 made from the auction of Akerson’s car, according to CorvetteBlogger

Akerson’s vintage Vette was among a number of special Chevrolets that crossed the auction block last week at Barrett-Jackson for charity, including the last 2012 COPO Camaro (a convertible finished in Inferno Orange), Guy Fieri’s custom ‘13 427 Convertible and of course, rights to the very first production 2014 C7. Akerson’s car was introduced on the night of Friday, January 18th and quickly sold to Rick Hendrick for $270,000. This price tied the top sale of the auction at the time, Fieri’s Corvette that sold on Thursday, January 17th.

For the $270,000 bid price, Hendrick secured himself the ’58 Regal Turquoise car, one of just about 510 that were painted in the unique hue. But more important than just the color of the car is the very history it represents, as it was acquired by Akerson soon after he became Chairman and CEO of GM in 2010. Just a few short years later, Akerson now hands the car off to Hendrick, giving all the proceeds made during the sale of his car to Habitat for Humanity of Detroit to use toward the revamp of the Morningside Commons neighborhood.

The $270,000 sale price was just a fraction of the $2.14 million that Chevrolet raised in charity auctions at the Scottsdale event, according to GM News. Among the top contributing cars were the 2014 C7, which brought in $1.05 million, and the 2012 COPO Camaro convertible, which brought in $400,000.
