Fill ‘Er Up: Details For NCM Sinkhole Repairs Have Been Announced

NCMsinkholerepair_1After so many trials and tribulations regarding the whole National Corvette Museum sinkhole affair, it seems that the wild ride is at last slowing to a stop. We’ve seen the damage done to the eight unfortunate cars, watched the video playback of the sinkhole’s appearance, and even examined the profit margin angle behind the whole thing (hint: it all verges on the sales of jars filled with dirt and rocks), but all great things must come to end.

NCM higher-ups reportedly met with construction personnel and engineers to draft a plan, work out a timeline, and eventually execute the necessary steps to restore the floor of the Skydome. The repairs are scheduled to begin on the 10th of November, and hopefully be completed by July 2015.

According to the plan, the large boulders occupying the hole are the first major obstacle that needs dealing with. Following the removal, sheet piling will block the cave openings and the hole will then be filled with roughly 4,000 tons of #2 stone, which will take a few weeks to do, from late December through January.

It's expected it will take up to nine months to completely fill and secure the Skydome sinkhole.

Afterwards, the Skydome’s concrete flooring will be removed to make way for repairs to the electrical, water, and HVAC utilities. Micropiles and grade beams will be used to offset any future cave-ins, keeping the floor intact and safe for visitors. The museum will unfortunately be taking down the webcams offered 24/7 observation of the Skydome from anywhere in the world, but visitors to the museum will be able to watch the reconstruction efforts through a Plexiglas viewing window.

“We appreciate all of the support, feedback, ideas and prayers throughout this very interesting time in our history,” said Wendell Strode, Museum Executive Director.  “Sunday, November 9 will be the very last day to see the sinkhole up close and in person, so if you’ve been wanting to check it out for yourself you have just over three weeks to do so.”
