Corvette Racing Clinches 2012 ALMS GT Championship With 4th Win

[1]Though the American Le Mans Series isn’t quite over just yet, Corvette Racing [2] was able seal the deal this past weekend with their fourth victory in nine races. This final victory has assured them the 2012 GT Series Championship, giving Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner the GT class crown after a hard-fought season with many ups and downs.

The victory came after this weekend’s race at Virginia International Raceway, the VIR 240, where Gavin and Milner were able to take, and hold onto the lead just 42 minutes into the 4 hour race. It was the perfect race day for the duo, who managed to finish nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second place Porsche, securing their spot on the podium, as well as the GT class victory.

Gavin was aided by early-race accident where a LMP1 car spun out, blocking many competitors including the No. 3 Corvette driven by Jan Magnussen. But Gavin was able to sneak through and take a commanding position early on. From there, it was a simple matter of holding off the competition until the 4 hour race came to an end.

The victory at VIR comes after similar victories at Mid-Ohio, Long Beach, and Monterey. Corvette Racing also had a number of other podium finishes that let they build up a commanding lead during the 2012 season. Now it is impossible for any other team to overtake them in points, giving Corvette Racing the keys to the championship.

It was a good day to be a Corvette fan, that’s for sure. The next race for Corvette Racing is the Petit Le Mans on October 20th.
