Dubai Cops Crack Down on Corvette Racers

Incidentally, in 2007 Dubai made headlines [3] by equipping a C6 Corvette as a fire response vehicle stocked with a portable fire extinguisher, hydraulic equipment and first aid kits

The Dubai Ring Road [4], what might be called the deadliest road in Dubai [5], and actually isn’t a ring at all, was the scene of a late-night Corvette-versus-Corvette race December 5th that led to a pair of arrests. 7 Days in Dubai reports [6] that the head of Dubai Traffic Police, General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen (and we are not sure if having a general as top traffic cop is awesome, terrifying, or both) said the two cars were spotted shortly after midnight, racing along the road that passes the outskirts of the city.

According to the police, garages in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah had organized the 500 meter race between the two Corvettes, starting from a standstill and supported by numerous spectator vehicles. Per the General, “They were driving at a crazy speed of more than 250kph (about 155 good old American miles an hour – Ed.) and when they realized they had been spotted they tried to escape, causing chaos as they weaved from lane to lane.” One driver was caught at the scene, while the other turned himself in later on that day, as the police had managed to get his license plate number.

Both vehicles have been seized and the drivers received fines for racing, endangering lives and attempting to evade the police – a slap on the wrist instead of the axe to the wrist we might imagine…
