Delicious Resto-Mod 1962 Corvette from Vintage Fabrication

We love resto-mods at Power Automedia. We dig original cars and preserving Corvette history too, but rethinking a old ‘Vette can give it a new lease on life.  Instead of being cloistered away in a garage somewhere, a C1 with modern underpinnings begs to be out in the sun, driven and enjoyed.

If you like these new-age, old ‘Vettes, we’ve got a textbook example of how to do one right. Check out this beautiful 1962 Corvette built by Bobby Schumacher and his crew over at Vintage Fabrication in Kansas City.

We checked in with Bobby by telephone and he told us the car was built for owner Joe Boyd and “originally was a basket case that had been dissembled for restoration but then sat for years..”

Not to worry as the Vintage guys went to work reconstituting this old C1 for it’s new owner. A good solid foundation is the best place to start a resto-mod and Vintage chose a SRIII Motorsports chassis with trusted C4 suspension components. From there they bolted in a 600hp, LS2 motor with Magnusson blower and hooked it up to a Tremec 6-speed.

Awesome craftsmanship from Bobby Schumacher and the gang at Vintage Fabrication

Then the Vintage crew set their sights on the fiberglass. They started by molding in the headlight bezels and filling in the cowl vents and gas cap. Then they smoothed and shaved the body including the door handles and windshield wipers. After all that massaging, they sprayed the thing out in a beautiful fawn color matched to the shade of the ultra leather interior. Bobby told us “It’s easier to match paint to an interior swatch color than visa-versa.”

Speaking of the interior, this is where the build treads new ground. Evidently the car’s owner is a big hunk ‘a man, so they shortened the Flaming River steering column 5 inches, created a custom instrument cluster, and opened up room for it’s new pilot. The finishing touch is a killer, cut down ’55 Chevy steering wheel that fits the build perfectly.

If all this turns you on, it’ll be available this weekend with no reserve at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach.
