Craigslist Find: 1984 Corvette Meets 1968 Beetle… Or Something

[1]

It must be “Ruined Vette Week” on Craigslist, because this is the third oddity we’ve found that was once a fine example of America’s sports car. On the surface, it looks like another custom VW Beetle that’s ever so popular in the great state of California.

But if you dig a little deeper, and pay attention to the details, you’ll immediately notice the early C4 Corvette wheels, interior, and even the taillights hidden underneath what used to be the VW’s heat extracting vents in the rear. Honestly, we’re not sure if we love it or hate it.

Nice Vette, bro. Oh, wait.

Being Corvette lovers to the bone, we want to say it’s the latter, but at the same time, we couldn’t figure out a better use of a knackered ’68 Beetle if we tried. Obviously, we would prefer the natural, sleek body of the C4, but one can only assume (and hope) that it was in a horrific accident or fire, and it lives on as this creation you see here.

Underneath the VW shell is a 350 cubic inch V8 backed by a 700R4, although the ad doesn’t specify if the small-block in question is the original Cross-Fire injected version or not.

Reading the ad, and you get a sense of that this car was literally pieced together using scrap of metal to attach everything together. He calls it a rat rod, but some of us may have another word for it. The seller claims that he has (up to this point) been offered $1900 for the thing. We would have taken the money and ran.

We don’t understand why this VW-bodied Corvette has a Buick GSX novelty plate attached to the back of it. Maybe the seller is a fan of the classic Buick musclecar, or he just thinks it looks cool. We would sell it separately if we were him.
