Corvette Crash Knocks Out Power to Thousands in Oregon

boring-crash [1]Nobody wants to crash their car, but occasionally, bad things/bad decisions happen, and we end up in a ditch on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Our bad decision can affect many more people than just ourselves though, even beyond the emergency crew and insurance agents who have to deal with your bad-driving butt.

Oregon Live [2] reports that the driver of a C5 Corvette convertible knocked out power to more than 2,000 people in Boring, Oregon (no, we are not making that up [3]. It’s named for William H. Boring, an early resident of the area.) Oh, and the Corvette had been purchased just hours earlier. That just adds salt to the wound.

According to police, around 9pm Tuesday night, 42-year old Ethan Cross was driving his new-to-him 1999 Corvette convertible on a rural road when he lost control and smashed into a telephone pole, obliterating it.. Cross had bought the Corvette just hours before at a local dealership, and claims he was going just 40 MPH, or 5 MPH below the posted speed limit, at the time of the accident.

However, one look at the accident damage seems to indicate a much higher rate of speed. “Obliterated” is the word we would use to describe that telephone pole. Police believe Cross was actually going between 75 and 90 MPH when he smashed into the pole. His accident left about 2,000 people without power for several hours that night, though Cross himself was uninjured. However, because of downed power lines around the wreck, it took rescuers more than an hour to extract him from the Corvette.

That’s one expensive bad decision to be sure.
