When we heard the news that a Corvette C6 driver was shot in a road-rage incident last week by a Mustang driver, our first reaction was it must be extreme jealousy! CBS46 Atlanta reported that Angelina Christiano, 44, was driving her yellow Corvette C6 in the center lane of Highway 78 in DeKalb County around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 12th with her 25-year-old son. Apparently she was being closely followed by a driver in a late-model black Ford Mustang.
According to the DeKalb County Police Department Major Stephen Fore, “She motioned for that vehicle to go around her because he was following so closely. As they approached Mountain Industrial [Road], the Ford Mustang began to exit and the driver fired several rounds at the back of the Corvette.”
One of the bullets struck Christiano in the upper back causing her to lose control of her vehicle. Christiano’s 25-year-old son escaped unharmed, but she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The gunman was described as a Hispanic male who fled the scene. The DeKalb County Police Department immediately set forth efforts to apprehend the suspect by asking anyone with information to contact them.
WSBTV reported on October 23, 2015 that the suspect in the October 12th incident has been apprehended. His name is Jose Dionicio Ovalles. Ovalles, who is already a convicted felon, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and illegal possession of a firearm. The DeKalb County investigators credit witnesses with helping identify Ovalles. Once identified, the DeKalb County Police Department found Ovalles already in jail on an unrelated theft charge. Major Fore stated, “In today’s time, I’d encourage anyone to avoid confrontation with motorists out on the roadway. You just don’t know what’s in that other person’s mind.”
In this specific case, however, there was no confrontation. The Corvette driver was simply signaling the motorist behind her to go ahead and pass; a simple act of kindness that almost turned fatal.
