Corvette, A Language All Its Own: A 1990 Sales Training Video

Nostalgia for past decades and all things indicative of bygone eras usually induce good memories, but a Corvette sales video reminds of the gaudy nature of the early 90’s. Love them or hate them, the C4 Corvettes have been around for over two decades and this 22-year-old video showcases the selling points of the C4 along with a healthy dose of 90’s cheese. Sure, it looks dated as soon as the first images roll across the screen, but “Corvette: A Language All Its Own” is a part of the history of the American sports car (thanks to TestDriveJunkie.com for tracking down the important piece of Corvette history). “Corvette continues to augment the meaning of sports car exotica,” is part of the introduction to the 1990 model ‘Vette, but it is really hard to get past the Aquanet laden bangs and dated appearance of the actress.

Not everyone could afford to purchase a ’90 off the showroom floor, but some twenty-two years later there are plenty of C4’s awaiting new homes on Craigslist, used car lots, swap meets and eBay. Improvements such as an the digital/analog dash display, on board computer, completely redesigned interior and boldly restyled steering wheel to accommodate the newly implanted airbag were just a few selling points that made the ’90 model stand apart from previous years.

Thanks to the period correct soundtrack for the driving sequences (aka car porn) this video is clearly representative of the early 90’s, but it makes the viewer wonder if tunes on the video were included with the complimentary compact disc and where the driver got his super cool gloves. It is hard to imagine new buyers rocking out to tunes inspired by Lifetime movies while cruising scenic highways and wearing driving gloves, but then again people did a lot of cocaine in the ‘80s. Corvette owners are generally a classy bunch, but this video does an excellent job of making owners appear cheesy while still proficiently highlighting the selling points of the car.
