Clairco Tool Co./Sandvik Coromant’s 2005 C6 Drag Vette

[1]If you’re thinking this C6 Corvette looks familiar, you are correct. This particular Vette, driven by Steven Griswold, took first place out of 65 cars in the Proform LSX Rumble index class of the Chevy Performance LSX Challenge back in October at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis – coverage from our sister site, LSXMag [2], of the whole GM Performance LSX Challenge can be seen here [3].

[4]The first thing we notice about this C6 Vette is the matte vinyl wrap – its color shifting properties make quite the presence at the race track. No matter what angle you look at the car, you will see a different color, from blue to purple to green. While this is one of the prettiest drag Corvettes we’ve seen, it sure as hell isn’t slow and it’s got the modification list to prove it. Being a 2005, the first year of the C6, there is an LS2 under the hood instead of the later LS3 engine. For those that don’t know, the LS3 started coming in the C6 for the 2008 and up model years.

Getting into the engine mods, the first thing that pops out at us is the ProCharger [7] F1C blower; it’s huge! Besides the F1C, this LS2 is equipped with custom Diamond [8] pistons, Total Seal [9] piston rings, Lingenfelter [10] ported heads, a FAST [11] intake manifold, Nick Williams [12] throttle body, and Mobil 1 [13] oil to keep it all lubricated. but that’s not even half of it.

Flowtech Induction [14]custom grind hydraulic roller cam regulates the valves, Callies [15] crankshaft and rods transfer the power to the flexplate while an Innovators West [16] crank damper keeps the crankshaft spinning in harmony. An Aeromotive [17] fuel pump feeds fuel to the rail, which is then injected and regulated by Holley [18]‘s Dominator EFI system with Champion [19] S63A race spark plugs taking care of the fire. Keeping the battery charged and all other electronics running is a Mechman [20] billet alternator. An AEM [21] water/meth system is used to lower intake air temperatures while the Dad’s [22] custom water tank and air-to-water intercooler keep the air cool before it enters the throttle body.

[23]Propelling the Vette down the strip to its best quarter mile time of 8.96 is an RPM Transmissions [24] 2-speed PowerGlide with a Coan torque converter, RPM Transmissions Z06 differential, and Driveshaft Shop [25] axles and driveshaft. Lightweight Weld Racing [26] wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson [27] slicks provide all grip needed when powering down the track and all systems are monitored carefully through Autometer [28] gauges.

Over the last two years, this car has been through quite the transformation – the engine was completely rebuilt and the car was given a fresh look with a new vinyl wrap. Winning the LSX Index Rumble was definitely the team’s biggest accomplishment and we only hope more success comes their way. Head over to Clairco Tool Company’s website [29] for loads of pictures and some more information about the car.
