Chevy Teases C7 Corvette Z06 Debut For Detroit Auto Show

2015-Chevrolet-CorvetteZ06-001-medium [1]It’s hard to keep a secret in a car-crazed city like Detroit, and within minutes of the unveiling of the 2014 Corvette Stingray, questions regarding a potential Z06 track version started floating around. Today GM confirmed what most of us already knew, that a Corvette Z06 was in the works, and that it will make its world debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show [2] in Detroit.

While details are scant, and the teaser photo GM put out doesn’t reveal much, we have plenty of rumors and hearsay to keep us occupied between now and the January debut.

2014-corvette-stingray1 [3]There are precious few details to go on, besides a late 2014 production date and GM claiming the 2015 Corvette Z06 “…will be the most track-capable Corvette ever, designed to supercar levels of performance through its unique powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic features.” The picture shows some big black wheels, what look like Pilot Sport Cup tires, restyled fender air vents, and… that’s it. While we can’t speak to the chassis or aero improvements, there are plenty of rumors regarding the unique powertrain.

One rumor suggests that the 4.5 liter twin-turbo V8 that debuted in the Cadillac Elmiraj [4] could make its way into the 2015 Corvette Z06. That engine made 500 horsepower, though it could be just a concept, like the Elmiraj itself. Another possible candidate is a blown version of the LT1 engine we broke the news about [5] when a tipster sent us photos from inside GM’s prototype shop, though that would seem more likely for the next-gen ZR1.

Considering the last Z06 made 505 horsepower, we’re expecting closer to 600 with this iteration, depending on how GM massages whatever motor the next Z06 gets. We’ll know soon enough, and we doubt we’ll be disappointed.
