Barn Find: Potentially-Gorgeous ’66 Convertible Corvette

Barn Find 01Yet another time-worn classic has made its way to the auctions of eBay. This time, a Milano Maroon 1966 Corvette convertible. The poor C2 has sat amidst the dirt and disarray of the owner’s garage since the late ’80s.

The ‘Vette’s 30 years-worth of collected dust has left it looking worse-for-wear, but it is, after all, a timeless classic. With tender loving care and a little elbow grease, it could potentially turn out to be one stunning restoration.

However, the question is just how much TLC this ‘Vette will need. According to the seller, the car has been in his possession since 1973 and had 67,044 miles put on it before being stored. And as we can see from the pictures, the top has been down for the duration of its slumber – which could be cause for worry. After 25 years of being folded and tucked away, it’s likely that the top is in poor condition, if not ruined altogether.

As another consequence of being stored with the top down, the interior has a heavy layer of dust. Other than being filthy, it seems to be in decent shape. However, the car resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has thus seen all the extremes of weather – including rain and snow. It is possible then that the seats and carpeting could have water damage or even mold.

On the bright side, the body appears to be sound, with no major flaws or damage visible in the picture. Also, the car has a stainless steel exhaust and is equipped with a 327 small block V8 and four-speed manual transmission. The seller made clear that the engine will need a rebuild but, thanks to the widespread availability of parts, it should be a relatively easy (and fun) task.

Currently, bidding is up to nearly $27,000 – not a bad price considering most ’66 C2s go for $50,000-$90,000 dollars. If you are a fan of restorations and can appreciate a vintage Corvette, this could be a great investment.

What do you think? Given it’s current state and it’s potential – both good and bad – would you say yes to the ‘Vette, or pass?
