Barn Find Mystery: 1963 Corvette Z06 Tanker

Imagine the quandary. You just took in a ‘barn find’ Corvette… really, can there be many of these left by now? Anyway, this one is a 1963 split window coupe, so no matter what shape it’s in, it is worth grabbing. Wait, on digging deeper, the car is also a 1963 Z06, which is a rarity in itself. Thanks to Keith at CorvetteBlogger.com, we have a mystery to help solve…

There were only 199 made, distinguished by the Z06 Special Performance Equipment option that included the 360 hp fuel-injected 327 V8 with 11.25:1 compression, 4-speed transmission, 4.11 Positraction differential, power brakes with metallic linings, heavy duty stabilizer bars, along with heavy duty springs and shocks.

This car was also built with the RPO N06, 36-gallon fuel tank, specifically made for endurance racing, and that makes it one of just 63 cars with that option and earns it the “Tanker” name – a special car, indeed. For ProTeam Classic Corvette Sales, in Napoleon, Ohio, this is not the first 1963 Z06 Tanker they’ve come across, but the background information on this one is missing some portions.

They are looking for anyone that may be able to help fill in the blanks. First, the car’s VIN is 30837S106669. The car was owned by Dick Russel from 1969 to 1971 and then Paul Jorgensen from 1972 – 2010. The car was raced throughout 1963 by Josh (A.W.) Joslin, including a May 1963 event at Virginia International Raceway where it wore number 15. In September, the car appeared at the Road America 500 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, driven as #51 by Dick Lang and Walter Joslin.

Apparently, A.W. Joslin won the A/Production SCCA central divisional championship in 1962, so this car was likely instrumental in that win. The car has been around the central Michigan area most of it’s life, with records appearing in Haslett, Greenville, Sheridan and the Lansing area. While it was originally delivered in silver and is currently silver, there is some suspicion that it may have been raced in Maroon paint.
