Barn Find: 1954 Corvette, Possible Salt Flat Racer?

1954-Corvette-race-car-600x375Thanks to our friends over at Barn Finds, we have the opportunity to view this 1954 Corvette. According to the owner, there is a large lot of miscellaneous parts that accompany the car and hopefully some of these can be used should the car get restored.

fender-holes-600x374While it will certainly take a lot of luck and research to find out what the history of this ’54 really is, assuming one can find it at all, there are a few interesting clues within the body. To begin with, their have been holes drilled through the front fenders and hood. These types of holes were sometimes found in high speed machines of the era in an effort to relieve excess pressure building inside the body. Additionally, there have been some modification to the firewall which could possibly have been used to move the engine rearward.

Well this could have been used for a number of modifications, but the guys at Barn Finds suspect this may have been a more streamlined way to mount a parachute to the back of the car to slow down from the high-speed passes. Also, they mentioned that the hole was cut in such a way that looks like it was professionally done, and not just an after thought. All of these modifications lend themselves to a high speed machine, so maybe this car used to tear up the salt flats of Bonneville!

This car was put up on eBay, but unfortunately the bidding did come to an end on Chirstmas Eve. With a total of 26 bids, the car reached a final price of $7577.77 and we certainly hope it has gone to a home or garage where it will be be restored to its former glory.
