It’s been nearly 60 years now since the Corvette made its debut, and the model has come a long way, from a mere concept car debuted at the 1953 GM Motorama to the most powerful Chevrolet ever built. As many of you know, to celebrate the upcoming anniversary of America’s favorite sports car, Chevrolet has created the 60th Anniversary package that can be applied to any 2013 Corvette model, including the new 427 Convertible. But the 2013 Corvettes aren’t the only ones getting in on the action. As we found out from Sports Car Illustrated, two Corvette Daytona Prototype (DP) race cars will be sporting the 60th Anniversary colors at tomorrow’s Chevrolet Grand-Am 200 at Belle Isle.
The two DP cars belong to Action Express Racing, and they will be trading in their traditional red, white and blue liveries to wear the commemorative colors of the Corvette’s anniversary package in tomorrow’s race. Just like the specialty package offered on the 2013 Corvettes, the DPs will be finished in Arctic White with Pearl Silver Blue racing stripes that run the entire length of the car’s body.
“We are so very pleased to have our cars represent the 60th Anniversary Corvette in honor of Chevrolet, and in recognition of all they have done for the Rolex Series,” team owner Bob Johnson told Sports Car Illustrated . “I’m sure that our drivers and crew members will take extra pride participating in the Belle Isle event with our cars fitted with the special edition graphics package.”
In keeping with their team identity, the Action Express Racing Corvette DPs will also feature red and blue body accents and special edition numbers in the patriotic colors.
On Saturday June 2nd, the Action Express Racing cars will take to the track for the fifth round of the Rolex DP Grand-Am Series. Currently, No. 5 Corvette DP drivers Darren Law and David Donohue are tied for sixth in driver standings after third, fourth, fifth and ninth place finishes so far in the season. No. 9 Corvette DP drivers Joao Barbosa sits in eighth, Terry Borcheller in tenth, and JC France in twelfth. For Saturday’s race, Law will move over to co-pilot the No.9 car while Borcheller will co-pilot the No. 5 car. Action Express drivers will be autographing special hero cards featuring the Corvettes in their anniversary liveries at 1pm at the event.
The Grand-Am 200 at Belle Isle starts at 5pm ET and can be seen live on SPEED. Be sure to tune in to see the anniversary edition Corvette DPs and the ‘12 Camaro ZL1 pace car set to start the race.
